Poppin FlameLicker Engine

This is an Air-Cooled vacuum engine designed by Dr. JRSenft. I found the plans in the November 1980 edition of Live Steam. I built this over the last few months and it is fun to watch it run. It is lubricated with Extra Fine Graphite powder to lessen friction. The fuel in the copper burner is alcohol.

very nice work!
Looking good!
where can buy this engine?
Thank you very much
You can’t, you have to make one. A company called PM Research Inc has one simular.
nice and simple mechanics there I like it! ;P
Could you hook this up to the crankshaft (which has a flywheel)of a car engine?
where do you get the parts??
I machined them myself with a lathe and milling machine
thought so.
would you consider selling a copy of your blueprint?
i am very interested.
how does it work?
Basicly, as the piston moves down, a valve opens on the front and the flame is sucked in.The valve then closes and the hot air in the cylinder is cooled by the cylinder walls and creates a vacuum that pulls the piston back.
I found them on the net somewhere, try searching for Poppin vacuum engine.
i luv that engine/////////////WHOOP
that is pretty cool
can u link me the webstie for the plans for the perticalr modle? thanks!
Very nice engine i’m thinking of making one but i cant find any places that sell cast iron for cylinder, got any ideas?
Also one thing i would do if i was you is true up the flywheels
The plans call for cast iron, but I used aluminum. Some guys use old window sash weights that where on sliding windows.
thanks i’ll give the aluminium a shot. Would you mind sending me a copy of the plans? mine are of extreamly poor quality
thats cool!
thats neat as heck
Where can I get a set of plans? I would really love to make one of these. Thanks
Hello,
This is a great video and I love your method of placing the flame and rotating it. I think I found the plans for the engine, I’ll know once the copy arrives. Can you share your detials for how you built the base and flame holder? Also is that flame holder something that I can purchase?
For the tank on the burnner, I used a 1″ copper pipe cap with a cover soldered on. The wick tube is just a 1/4″ diameter copper pipe. I made mine height adjustable, but it is not needed.
Hi,VERY nice workmanship! really wanted to get some plans for a flame licker ,could you point me in the right direction, I like your design VERY much.thanks for your time ..Dave
